DPS says it will continue to patrol Austin | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: The partnership between the Austin Police and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) has been suspended once again, and the Mayor does not believe it will start up again. This comes after recent news stories about GPS. DPS responded on Twitter, stating that they will continue to patrol in Austin. The deployment of troopers in the city was a request from the Mayor, but it was put on pause due to the expiration of a COVID-era immigration policy. The decision to suspend the partnership was made after a report showed troopers disproportionately arresting black and Latino residents. The city claims that the partnership brought a decrease in violent crime and shorter response times. The Mayor does not foresee the partnership resuming.
