Some history
The Storm of 1900 knocked the cornice and top floor off the building that Col. William L. Moody built to contain his cotton commission and banking operations. It retains the finely finished dark and red brick surfaces and subtle detailing with which Clayton organized its Strand and 22nd Street elevations. As on this other Strand commercial buildings, Clayton treated the street walls of the Moody Building as shallow layered planes. Triple windows are framed with brick surrounds and bands of sparkling yellow tile. Along 22nd Street, windows are stacked in vertical bays marked off by ribbed and incised brick piers. Inset panels of tile and yellow brick enhance the illusion that the street walls are composed of deeply receding layers. Upholding these bravura displays of ornamental brickwork are cast-iron storefronts, which have lost their double-leaf doors and column capitals. After the 1900 storm, Clayton repaired the building (E. Beasley & S. Fox, Galveston Architecture Guidebook).
