Houston, Harris County rent up 28.5%, according to Kinder Institute

SUMMARY: According to a report by the Kinder Institute, more than half of renters in Houston and Harris County struggle to afford their rent, with 30% of their monthly income going towards housing. West Harris County has one of the highest eviction rates. The issue affects not only single individuals or roommates, but also families, with 88% of single parent households and 73% of two-parent households with children facing cost burdens. Rent costs have increased by 28.5% between 2015 and 2021, reaching an average of $1100 per month. Negotiating and planning ahead can help alleviate some of the financial strain for renters.

LeShawn Fondren moved to Houston almost a year ago to be close to her fiancé and his family. Since the move she's renting a place and it hasn't been easy.

The latest update at 1:00 PM shows it remains a tropical system, but it’s projected to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane near the Texas coast, particularly around Corpus Christi and Victoria.
