McDade Watermelon Festival celebrates 75 years | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Today is the 75th McDade Watermelon Festival, a day-long celebration in McDade, Austin. The festivities start bright and early with the 5K watermelon weigh-in, showcasing watermelons of all sizes, ranging from 100 to 200 pounds. In 2021, the winning watermelon weighed 243 pounds and raised $9,000 worth of scholarships. The festival aims to support the community by donating proceeds to school scholarships, grants for local nonprofits, and the food pantry. In addition to enjoying watermelon on its own, attendees can also try a refreshing watermelon, strawberry, and lime smoothie. The festival culminates in a free watermelon feast at 5:30 PM, where people can enjoy as much watermelon as they want. Whole watermelons are also available for purchase throughout the day. It is a cherished community event and a favorite summer snack for many.

SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Barl is expected to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane by tomorrow afternoon, affecting the Texas coast between Corpus Christi and Houston, near Port Lavaca by Monday morning. With reduced wind shear, the storm’s center may shift northward, altering its forecast track. A hurricane warning is in effect along the central Gulf Coast, with tropical storm-force winds beginning Sunday and increasing. Significant rainfall is forecast, with 5-10 inches north of Corpus Christi and up to 1.5 feet in isolated areas. Eastern and southeastern counties could see 4-7 inches of rain. Winds and rain will persist into Monday, potentially causing flooding before exiting eastward.
