Study shows feeling unsafe in your neighborhood increases likelihood of smoking
SUMMARY: A University of Houston study led by psychology professor Dr. Michael Zinsky reveals that smoking rates and quitting difficulties are higher in neighborhoods perceived as unsafe. Dr. Zinsky, principal investigator of the study, explains that chronic stress due to unsafe environments exacerbates smoking habits. The study involved 95 individuals, mostly African-American, average age 45, with lower income and high school education, who had attempted to quit around eight or nine times previously. SUMMARY: Meteorologist Anthony provides an update on Hurricane Barrel, which is nearing northern Mexico with a well-defined eye, moving West Northwest at 15 mph and winds at 65 mph. Expected to intensify, it’s shifting rightward, affecting Corpus Christi less and potentially hitting Matagorda Bay directly by Monday. A hurricane watch is in effect from Matagorda County to South Texas, with storm surges from three to five feet. Concerns stem from potential rightward movement towards Southeast Texas, not stalling like Harvey in 2017. Models show varying impacts, but significant rainfall (up to 7 inches) is expected in Southeast Texas, with flooding risks on Monday and Tuesday.
Friday night update of Hurricane Beryl
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Ali Terano reports that the storm system Barrel is headed towards Texas, expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm. Over the next 24-36 hours, it may intensify to Hurricane strength by Sunday night. The storm’s track has shifted eastward, with landfall now anticipated near Corpus Christi on Monday afternoon, potentially as a strong Category 1 or borderline Category 2 hurricane. The storm could bring 5-10 inches of rain, with isolated areas seeing over a foot, particularly impacting East and Southeast Texas. Warm Gulf waters and favorable conditions will likely aid the storm’s intensification. Residents should closely monitor updates.

SUMMARY: Sandbag distribution centers along the Texas coastline were overwhelmed on Friday, with Corpus Christi running out of 10,000 bags by noon. Texas officials, including Emergency Management Chief Nim Kid and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, emphasized the need for a prepared, not panicked, community as Hurricane Barrel approaches, expected to hit by Monday. Patrick, acting in Governor Abbott's absence, stressed the importance of monitoring the storm, especially for those on Texas beaches during the holiday weekend due to dangerous rip currents. The state has ramped up operations, issuing a disaster declaration for 39 counties, which could extend further as the situation develops.
Beryl is expected to regain strength and turn back into a hurricane as it heads into the Gulf of Mexico.
