Texans asked to conserve power despite lower demand
SUMMARY: The Texas power grid operator, ERCOT, came close to activating emergency conditions last night, prompting concerns about the state's energy supply. ERCOT has asked Texans to conserve power seven times in the past ten days, despite cooler weather this week. Yesterday's peak demand did not reach the highest number seen this summer, but if it had been 1% higher, ERCOT would have tapped into emergency reserves and implemented rolling blackouts. ERCOT's CEO cited low wind output and an increase in thermal generate plant outages as contributing factors. The agency's board is considering changing rules for energy storage batteries, which could make the grid less reliable and increase energy costs.

Another House Democrat calls for Biden to step down
SUMMARY: House Democrat Angie Craig has joined calls for President Biden to exit the presidential race, as many Democrats doubt his capacity to serve another term. They fear his refusal to acknowledge poll warnings could harm down-ballot races, with critical votes expected to be decided by slim margins. Concerns are especially high in the House, where Democrats see a chance to regain control in November. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is set to meet with top House Democrats, while Senator Mark Warner is working to persuade Biden to step aside. Conversely, Senator John Fetterman supports Biden and criticizes calls for his withdrawal.
