Texas Senate gives approval to ‘school choice’ bill, but House members say they will block it

SUMMARY: The Texas Senate has given preliminary approval to school funding bills that include education savings accounts (ESAs). SB One provides $8,000 accounts for eligible students to use on private school tuition and related fees, while SB Two includes $10,000 raises for teachers in rural school districts and an extra $3,000 for urban teachers. It also increases public school funding by $75 per student, the first increase in four years. However, there is no guarantee of a similar outcome in the Texas House, as a coalition of Democrats and rural Republicans historically block voucher legislation in the House. Governor Abbott has said he believes the House is close to passing education savings accounts, but opposition from Democrats could hinder its progress. Critics argue that ESAs would take public dollars away from public schools in need. Governor Abbott has stated that he will only add teacher pay raises and school funding to the special session if school choice is passed by both chambers. The latest data shows that Texas teachers are paid about $8,000 less per year than the national average. Critics see this as a power play by the governor and argue that it shows disrespect for teachers. School board trustees are focused on keeping crucial public dollars in their districts, as some districts have had to pay large sums back to the state and still face budget deficits. Teachers worry about competition for funds and the potential for a smaller budget if school choice passes.

The Texas Senate gave preliminary approval, once again, to school funding bills that include education savings accounts, but there's no guarantee of a similar outcome in the Texas House.

Biden says Supreme Court ruling on immunity means ‘no limits’ on presidential actions

Published

on

www.youtube.com – FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth – 2024-07-01 21:22:31

SUMMARY: President Biden criticized the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling granting former President Trump and other presidents broad immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office. Biden argued that the decision dangerously removes legal constraints on presidential power. The Court's ruling provides no immunity for unofficial acts, but Federal prosecutors now must distinguish between official and unofficial conduct. Trump, who faces prosecution for attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the January 6th insurrection, called the decision a victory for democracy. The Court's liberal justices dissented, warning it creates a law-free zone around the president, potentially impacting other ongoing cases against Trump.

Biden condemned the ruling, stating that the Supreme Court's decision on immunity means “there are virtually no limits” on a president's actions.
