SUMMARY: Opal Lee, known as the grandmother of Juneteenth, has been a lifelong advocate for freedom and equality, teaching for 25 years, serving as a counselor for another 25 years, and walking from Fort Worth to Washington D.C. at the age of 89 to raise awareness for Juneteenth as a national holiday. With the help of Dion Sims and volunteers, she collected 1.5 million signatures to petition for Juneteenth to be made a national holiday. Finally, in 2021, President Biden signed a bill to make Juneteenth a national holiday, fulfilling Opal Lee’s lifelong dream. She believes Juneteenth is about freedom for all people, not just black people, and is advocating for the building of a national Juneteenth museum as a way for all people to find themselves in the freedom story. She also emphasizes the need to address various disparities and continue advocating for equal rights for all.

Opal Lee is an author, a teacher, a civil rights activist, and she’s known as “The Grandmother of Juneteenth.” The Tex Factor sat down with the 96-year-old Fort Worth resident to learn about her life-long journey helping others. And how, at 89, she started a nationwide movement that would result in Juneteenth becoming a national holiday.
