Biden says Supreme Court ruling on immunity means ‘no limits’ on presidential actions
SUMMARY: President Biden criticized the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling granting former President Trump and other presidents broad immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office. Biden argued that the decision dangerously removes legal constraints on presidential power. The Court's ruling provides no immunity for unofficial acts, but Federal prosecutors now must distinguish between official and unofficial conduct. Trump, who faces prosecution for attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the January 6th insurrection, called the decision a victory for democracy. The Court's liberal justices dissented, warning it creates a law-free zone around the president, potentially impacting other ongoing cases against Trump.
Biden condemned the ruling, stating that the Supreme Court's decision on immunity means “there are virtually no limits” on a president's actions.
